The Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation is accepting proposals for two  student research grants. The WPEF research grant provides up to $2,000 in funding to an undergraduate or graduate student (M.S. or Ph.D.) conducting research on any high-elevation, five-needle pine species. Relevant research areas include ecological threats, wildlife interactions, restoration strategies, ecosystem impacts and sociopolitical issues. The second research grant, which is funded by philanthropist John Van Gundy, awards $1,000 for research focused on whitebark pine dynamics under climate change.

Updates to this year’s grants

  • The amount may vary from $1,000 to $2,000
  • Research can focus on ANY high-elevation, five-needle pine species
  • Up to half of the grant may be used for salary

Both grants are open to students enrolled in an academic institution in the U.S., Canada or abroad. Funds are awarded for salary (up to half) or travel expenses for field work or consumable research supplies but cannot be used to purchase equipment. However, the Van Gundy funding may also be used for analysis. View or Download the 2025 Request for Proposals for more details on the proposal criteria and structure. Examples of past successful proposals can be found on the Student Grant Program web page. Application materials (electronic only) are due to [email protected] by February 14, 2025.
